      What’s your next move?

      By Melissa Smith

      What’s your next move?

We’ve kick started the year with the slight uncertainty of what the world or country can offer with Brexit and Donald Trump looming. And we wonder where our next legends are going to come from – with the loss of greats such as Bowie, Prince and George Michael.

But what we can guarantee is a tonne of brave, exciting, challenging and passionate agencies and people to work with. With all the troubles of the world – the creative industry is still flying high.

Never before have we seen leaders in the creative industry push to create agencies with a more diverse bench of talent with strong creative, strategic planning and account leadership to produce ground-breaking creative work across multi platforms in an evolving market.

But where does this leave you? You want change, but where do you go? You have agencies in mind, but how do you know what’s the next best and right move for you?

One agency does not fit all – some agencies may be the leaders in the industry but they may not be right for you…and that’s ok.

So how do you start to work out your next move?

      1. Think about who inspires you, who do you believe in and respect and can learn from. Strong leadership is key to any successful agency and this can come from all levels of the business. It is important that your vision, ambitions, goals match the agency you want to work in. And that you can work together to meet those goals.

      2. What creative work defines and inspires you?

Working within this industry we have the ability to change people’s behaviour by creating ideas which can make people laugh, cry or trigger a response positively or negatively.

Creativity is at the heart of every agency, so it’s important you have a point of view of what a good idea is and why. Having an opinion and being aware of the work that is out there is critical.

Great ideas come from inspirational and brave environments. To be part of this team, you have to live, breathe and be passionate about the industry we work in to make an impact.

      3. The People and culture

Behind every successful agency/business there is a team of people who are passionate, committed, ambitious and energised. Like-minded people tend to work better together. Think about how you like to work, which agency cultures best fit your personality and work ethic. You will spend a lot of time with your team so it’s important you can see the possibility of building strong relationships which makes your work a place of inspiration, progression and fun.

      4. The Opportunity

When looking for your next move, always think about the longer term vision. Where do you want to be in 2-5 years’ time? Which agency is going to help and support you get to the next level?

Be clear on where you want to grow in experience and what you want to be exposed to. And be honest in terms of managing your own expectations and ambitions. Some agencies can offer you different opportunities to grow which may not mirror your exact vision. This is not a bad thing. Be open to new challenges.

And if you don’t want to move – then be inspired to work smarter, be braver, be committed to what you believe in and enjoy it. Keep learning and discovering.

We are always here to help and advise you throughout your career.
